This experiment may seem peculiar, but believe me, if done right, it could be a game-changer. Here’s how you can perform this magical feat!
Growing Tomato and Potato: The Super Result
The first step is to individually cultivate a tomato plant and a potato plant by hand to make this experiment entirely cost-effective.
Growing Tomato Plant:
- Choose a small tomato and a pot with a diameter not less than 10 centimeters.
- Fill the pot with soft and well-draining soil.
- Cut the tomato, extract the seeds, and plant one seed about 1 centimeter deep in the soil.
- Water it thoroughly and place the pot in a well-lit area.
- After 30 days, you should have a seedling approximately 5 centimeters tall.
- After 2 months, the seedling should be around 20 centimeters tall with the main stem’s diameter larger than 5 millimeters.
Once the tomato plant reaches this stage, it’s ready for grafting.
Growing Potato Plant:
- Take a pot with a diameter of at least 25 centimeters and fill it with well-draining soil.
- Make a hole in the center of the soil, approximately 10 centimeters deep.
- Place a whole potato in the hole and cover it well with soil.
- Water it, and after 20 days, you should see the first sprouts emerging from the soil.
Once the potato plant is over 25 centimeters tall with branches’ diameter of 5 millimeters, you can proceed to grafting.
Grafting Process:
- Sterilize a cutter and cut the potato plant about 15 centimeters from the ground.
- Remove all leaves from the remaining stem in the soil.
- Cut the bare stem diagonally and halfway through, about 5 centimeters deep.
- Now, work on the tomato plant. Sterilize a pair of scissors and cut approximately 10 centimeters from the top.
- Remove excess leaves, leaving very few.
- Scrape off a part of the skin from the tomato plant stem using a sterilized cutter to create a live part.
Repeat the same process on the potato plant stem.
- Insert both stems into the soil in a pot and press the live parts together.
- Secure them with grafting tape to allow sap to pass from the potato plant to the tomato plant.
After completing these steps, wait for a few days to see if the grafting is successful.
Graft Development:
If the grafting is successful:
- After 7 days, you’ll notice both plants still alive, and the grafting base should be free of mold.
- After 14 days, the tomato plant will appear doubled in size, and the potato plant’s stems will also grow in the soil.
- After 2 months, the tomato plant should be around 20 centimeters long, and the potato plant stems will grow similarly.
You’ll eventually see small flowers that will give birth to your tomatoes. The experiment concludes when the potato plant stems appear dry, and the tomatoes are ripe.
At this point, harvest everything, remove the rootstock, and voilà, you have your harvest of potatoes and tomatoes.
