As the warm season approaches, witnessing our plants come back to life is one of the most delightful experiences. After caring for them throughout the winter, the unwelcome appearance of the dreaded scale insect, particularly the cottony or mealy variety, can be disheartening. This pest releases a white substance called honeydew, posing a threat to plant health.

Eliminating these insects is crucial for plant well-being. Fortunately, there are numerous effective and straightforward methods to achieve this without resorting to chemicals.

How to Ward Off Scale Insects

  1. Tea Tree Oil:
    • Renowned for its disinfectant and antibacterial properties, tea tree oil can be a powerful ally against scale insects. Dilute around ten drops in a liter of water and spray the solution on the leaves. Repeat this treatment every 4-5 days. Be cautious not to use it in excessively high temperatures, as it might impede leaf respiration.
  2. Marseille Soap:
    • The gentle yet disinfectant power of Marseille soap is widely known. Dissolve approximately 20 grams of the product in a liter of water and spray the solution on your plant’s foliage every 3-4 days. The infestation will soon be a distant memory.
  3. Garlic and Onion:
    • For plants positioned at a sufficient distance, a mixture of finely chopped garlic and onion can be employed. Add these to 5 liters of water and apply the solution to the leaves. Alternatively, you can plant a few garlic cloves around the plant. As they sprout and emit their scent, the pesky insects should disappear.
  4. White Alcohol Vinegar:
    • An extremely effective method involves using white alcohol vinegar. Dilute a measuring cup in a liter of water and gently pass the solution over the leaves using a cotton ball every 5 days. Your plants will finally be liberated.
  5. Denatured Alcohol:
    • For stubborn infestations, a more aggressive approach involves creating a solution with a liter of water and a tablespoon of denatured alcohol. Use this remedy only on resilient plants and never on excessively hot days. While highly effective, it can be equally harsh.
  6. Direct Sunlight:
    • Lastly, expose the plants to direct sunlight to combat scale insects, provided the plant can tolerate it. These pests are sensitive to strong light. Rotate the pot occasionally to prevent the insects from simply moving from one leaf to another.
