Firstly, you should know that the intensity and coloration of the hydrangeas depend entirely on the soil’s pH. If the soil around them is highly alkaline, the color will be intense, and vice versa, approaching 7. To see them turn blue, it’s necessary to have a pH closer to 4.5.
The secret to providing the right environment for blue hydrangeas lies in your kitchen! Simply add a couple of coffee grounds to the vase or soil every week, and you’ll see the desired change in a short time. Coffee makes the soil acidic to the right degree, and you’ll be satisfied with the result.
But that’s not the only method you can use. You can also replace coffee grounds with eggshells. Crumble them into small pieces and add them to the soil, whether in an outdoor bed or a vase on your balcony or terrace.
Another method at your disposal is the use of iron! Iron nails, in particular, release an acidic content once oxidized, which will alter the hydrangeas’ color, making it darker. However, the simplest and therefore most recommended method remains the first one described – using coffee grounds.
